A new U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) international agricultural trade report documents the significant market opportunities in El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras—countries where the American Soybean Association (ASA) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) and its Central American supply chain partners promote a variety of foods made with U.S. soy.
The report on the three countries, which are called the Northern Triangle of Central America, states that population and economic growth and demand for imported goods are on the rise. The countries are part of the CAFTA-DR free trade agreement that strengthened U.S. ties with Central America and helped spur economic growth and trade. The report also details increased consumer demand for high-value products is resulting from growing exposure to hypermarkets and modern retail chains.
ASA/WISHH’s activities in the region included participation in the USDA-supported marketing campaign SaborUSA in August 2017 where the Guatemalan-headquartered Alimentos company featured its products made with U.S. soy and corn. ASA/WISHH works with Alimentos and other companies that offer beverages, cereals and many other foods to a wide-range of income sectors, including upscale grocers to school meals and other institutional feeding programs.
