The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) is warning growers to be proactive in identifying a problematic weed on their farms.
Palmer amaranth is a very fast growing weed that has spread out of its native south west areas to other parts of the U.S. It has a growth rate of 2─3 inches per day and commonly reaches heights of 6─8 feet, greatly inhibiting productive crop growth. According to USDA, yield losses have been reported up to 91 percent in corn and 79 percent in soybeans.
Landowners and farmers can help by being proactive in identifying Palmer and report any sightings to local county extension agents and crop consultants.
