White House Announces Executive Order for Seafood

May 14, 2020

The White House announced an Executive Order for seafood last week. The “Promoting American Seafood Competitiveness and Economic Growth” Executive Order is of particular importance to ASA because of its aquaculture provisions. An Executive Order is a directive issued by the president of the United States that manages operations of the federal government.

The Executive Order supports the “expansion of sustainable U.S. seafood production through more efficient and predictable aquaculture permitting.” Specifically, Section 6, Removing Barriers to Aquaculture Permitting, designates NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) as the lead agency for aquaculture projects located outside of the waters of any state or territory and within the exclusive economic zone of the United States. ASA supports this designation. Additionally, it requires agencies to coordinate on the identification of up to 10 aquaculture opportunity areas.
