The Obama Administration formerly announced to Congress this week that it would begin negotiations on a comprehensive trade and investment agreement with the European Union in 90 days.
"The decision to launch negotiations on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership (TTIP) reflects the broadly shared conviction that transatlantic trade and investment can be an even stronger driver of mutual job creation, growth, and increased competitiveness," said acting U.S. Trade Representative Demetrios Marantis in a letter to lawmakers Wednesday.
The implications of the TTIP for agriculture are broad, and ASA has repeatedly expressed its support for such an agreement, provided it provides a framework in which barriers to agricultural trade are reduced.
To examine the potential role agriculture will play in the larger TTIP discussions, the Washington-based International Food and Agricultural Trade Policy Council released a white paper this month that looks at the various impacts the TTIP will have on agriculture.
