President of GAPFA, Michael Nyarko Ampem, joined UTV Ghana live to discuss the donation which will provide their local community with access to quality protein.
With COVID-19 creating uncertainty in agricultural markets and supply chains around the world, a group of Ghanaian poultry farmers saw an opportunity to reduce food waste and ensure their local community had access to quality protein.
The Greater Accra Poultry Famers Association (GAPFA) donated 27,000 eggs to the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection who has be distributing cooked meals to the public during a three-week government mandated lockdown in the capital city. Additionally, GAPFA donated 12,000 eggs to an organization founded by Ghana’s First Lady that focuses on providing support to the nation’s most vulnerable population.
GAPFA is a beneficiary of ASA/WISHH’s AMPLIFIES program, a USDA-funded Food for Progress project aimed at building the capacity for Ghana’s poultry industry, decreasing the protein gap, and increasing food security in Ghana. Ghana’s current demand for soybeans is outpacing local supply and ASA/WISHH’s market development work is laying a foundation for Ghana to become a long-term trade partner for U.S. soy.
