The American Soybean Association/World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (ASA/WISHH) Africa Program Director Erica Morrow traveled to Liberia this week to assist in closeout activities for the Health, Agriculture, and Nutrition Development for Sustainability (HANDS) program, a Food for Peace Project.
WISHH acts as a subcontractor to OIC International, a Washington D.C. based development organization that received funding for the program through the United States Agency for International Development (USAID).
WISHH is finishing the fifth and final year of the program, having successfully opened two “Super Gari” processing facilities, conducting a nutrition education program and aquaculture activities. “Super Gari” is a blend of local cassava flour and U.S. sourced soy flour; the blend is then fortified with micronutrients to produce a healthy food product for pregnant and lactating women and children under two years of age. WISHH’s budget under this USAID funded project averaged more than $1 million per year and helped develop a business model that can be replicated in other countries where cassava is a staple food and protein is in short supply.
