WISHH Hosts Nigerian Fish Feed Workshop

Sep 20, 2018

The American Soybean Association’s (ASA) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) organized a fish feed and management workshop in Ibadan, Nigeria at the International Institute for Tropical Agriculture this week.

The workshop was funded by the United States Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Emerging Markets Program, and provided WISHH with important insight, which will guide future market development strategies in Nigeria, including feeding trials, technical assistance and partnerships with local industry.

More than 75 participants attended the workshop, representing a wide variety of stakeholder groups including local government, research institutions, feed millers, and fish farmers. Some of the largest feed millers in Nigeria participated, including Premier Feed Mills, Livestock Feeds, Grand Cereals and CHI.

Participants discussed the importance of using high quality feed ingredients, how to utilize feeding trials to understand the impact of ingredients on profitability, and some of the challenges faced by the Nigerian aquaculture industry.

Challenges discussed included, fish nutrition, marketing and the availability of ingredients.

The workshop was organized in partnership with WorldFish, an organization that WISHH is partnering with on feeding demonstrations in Cambodia.
