The American Soybean Association’s (ASA) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) organized a conference for U.S. protein products on trade, food technology and nutrition, held this week in Dakar, Senegal.
Joining WISHH on this U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) funded activity were the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute (ASMI), American Peanut Council (APC), USA Dry Bean Council, and USA Dry Pea and Lentil Council. Buyers from seven African countries joined Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) representatives from Ghana, Nigeria, South Africa and Senegal to link with the U.S. commodity groups to discuss the demand for protein, African food markets and the ability of various U.S. commodities and suppliers’ ability to supply the markets.
Tariffs, logistics and unfamiliarity with products and suppliers are common challenges to entering these markets. WISHH has blazed a trail and now five countries are importing U.S. soy. As a result of the conference, several of the African WISHH supply chain partners have started dialogues with other U.S. cooperators that could result in new U.S. exports.
