The American Soybean Association’s (ASA) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) headed to Senegal and the Cote d’lvoire at the beginning of June to prepare for the 2016 Global Broad-Based Initiative (GBI) conference.

The GBI conference, scheduled to be held in September, will focus on capacity building activities in both the nutrition and food technology sectors.

Africa Division Director Erica Morrow, Africa Regional Director Josh Neiderman and WISHH West Africa Regional Representative Mamadou Bousso, visited multiple venues in Dakar, Senegal to arrange conference meeting space and met with several companies that provide simultaneous translation services.

The WISHH representatives also met with the local U.S. Department of Agriculture and Foreign Agriculture Service (USDA/FAS) office. They also visited multiple importers of various commodities who might find new business opportunities at the upcoming September event with visiting marketers representing U.S. peanuts, dry beans, peas and lentils, soybeans and Alaska Seafood products.

While in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire, the team met with representatives of the national school feeding program to follow up on the commercial purchase of 165 metric tons of ADM textured vegetable protein for the program.

WISHH representatives also had an opportunity to meet with past trade team participants for both the meat and baking industries, to brainstorm future efforts for soy utilization through the local supply chain partner, SIVODIS.
