The American Soybean Association’s (ASA) World Initiative for Soy in Human Health (WISHH) program Executive Director Jim Hershey visited the Ivory Coast, West Africa on Monday to sign an agreement with Directorate of School Canteens, (DSC) the Ivorian Government’s school nutrition program.
Thanks to $30,000 from the U.S. Soybean Export Council's (USSEC) Internally Managed Funds dedicated to promoting U.S. soy exports for food uses, WISHH has offered to fund the training of more than 1,000 school cooks and food service managers. The DSC bought approximately 75 metric tons (five 40 foot containers) of textured soy protein, which is clearing customs this month. The personnel from over 500 schools throughout the country will be trained in January. The DCS will announce their budget for next school year in February, and WISHH and its partners expect the order for U.S. soy protein to double or triple for use in the new school year.
