ASA/WISHH organized a meeting with Nigerian poultry industry leaders in February at the 2019 International Production and Processing Expo (IPPE) in Atlanta, Georgia together with the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC).
The meeting was a coordinated effort between WISHH and USSEC and was used to initiate the first stages of the transition of the Nigerian poultry sector from WISHH to USSEC. Nigeria’s strong processing capacity, increasing population, and growing middle class indicate that sectors in Nigeria may be ready for USSEC’s market development intervention.
WISHH and USSEC have determined together that the poultry sector is ready for transition. The Nigerian poultry industry continues to account for the majority of U.S. soy purchases in sub-Saharan Africa. Recent estimates indicate that current demand for soy imports is approximately 200,000 MT per year, which will continue to rise as Nigeria’s poultry industry grows.
WISHH will continue to work in the human and aquaculture utilization sectors in Nigeria with the goal of transitioning those sectors to USSEC as well. USDA’s Foreign Market Development (FMD) funds allowed WISHH to send participants to the IPPE.
