ASA/WISHH is delivering expert information on the role of soy in feeds through an October 22 webinar organized by the Aquaculture Africa Magazine. The publication recognizes aquafeeds are a major constraint to aquaculture development on the African continent and reports that Africa already uses more than 100 million tons of aquafeeds annually, making feed a key cost and supply driver to the sector.

Thanks to WISHH’s soybean checkoff support leveraged with USDA’s Market Access Program funds, WISHH is a sponsor of the webinar. WISHH consultant Karen Veverica will share her expertise based on more than 40 years of work with warmwater fish, including 20 years in 22 African countries. She is the recently retired director of one of the world’s largest fisheries/aquaculture university-owned research stations located at Auburn University. Veverica is also consulting to WISHH’s USDA-funded Commercialization of Aquaculture for Sustainability Trade (CAST) - Cambodia project.

Another expert on the webinar is Kevin Fitzsimmons, Ph.D., who is the Arizona State University Environmental Science Director of International Initiatives. Fitzsimmons who advised WISHH’s successful FEEDing Pakistan project that introduced high-quality, soy-fortified, floating feed to 2000 Pakistani farmers increased the market value of tilapia from zero at the beginning of the project to an estimated $4.5 million USD four years later.
