This month the World Soy Foundation (WSF), begins work in partnership with the National Soybean Research Laboratory (NSRL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign on a project funded by the Illinois Soybean Association. The project is to conduct a market assessment and develop a business plan for a soon to be refurbished extruder based in Managua, Nicaragua.

WSF and NSRL will conduct a market assessment for products that could be produced with the extruder, and develop a subsequent business plan to ensure the extruder equipment is put to maximum and efficient use.
The business plan will be designed for use by in country partners including the Fabretto Children’s Foundation, the Nicaraguan Ministry of Nutrition and Education and the World Food Program (WFP), all partners which will have a role in the production process.
A draft formulation for a snack or other blended, extruded product to be produced with the extruder will be developed. The ultimate goal of the project is to develop a soy-based, high-protein product to be produced with the extruder to fight malnutrition in Nicaragua where nearly 50 percent of children suffer from chronic malnutrition.
