The World Soy Foundation is working with the National Soybean Research Laboratory (NSRL) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign to complete a market assessment and potential business plan for extrusion equipment in Managua, Nicaragua. The extruder, which currently sits in pieces in a warehouse, has been inspected by experts, who have determined that if put back into commission, the equipment could provide much needed protein at an affordable cost to local children in need. Originally constructed to make corn-soy blend, the market assessment will report on current market conditions in Nicaragua to recommend uses for the equipment.
The business plan will be designed for use by in country partners, and the assessment will include a draft formulation for a snack or other blended, extruded product that could be produced with the extruder.
